TMB Refuges - Frequently Asked Questions
What types of rooms do TMB refuges offer?
Most refuges have dormitories (4 to 20 people per room) with bunk beds. Some larger or valley refuges also offer private rooms for 2 to 4 people, but these fill up first. Regardless of room type, you must always bring your own sleeping bag liner. Pillows and blankets are provided.
How far in advance should I book a refuge?
For the most popular TMB stages, book 3 to 6 months ahead. Most refuges open reservations between December and February. By March, July and August nights on classic stages are often sold out.
Do refuges accept credit cards?
Some do, most not reliably - especially at high altitude where network coverage is poor. Plan on about 50 to 70 EUR$55 to $77 in cash per night in mixed bills. There are no ATMs above the valleys.
What is the food like in TMB refuges?
The food is one of the highlights of the trek. Most refuges offer half-board (dinner, night, and breakfast) for around 50 to 70 EUR$55 to $77 per person. Dinner is usually a hearty 3-course meal with local specialties. Breakfast is continental.
