The Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) is Europe’s most popular trek, and for good reason - it offers breathtaking scenery, the friendliness of mountain refuges, and a total immersion between the French, Swiss and Italian landscapes. With its lush alpine meadows and majestic peaks piercing an azure sky, the TMB is a true call to adventure. The passes offer unforgettable panoramas of the Mont Blanc and Beaufortain massifs, while the bells of grazing herds echo through this natural setting, adding an authentic touch to the experience.
Every year, more than 11,000 trekkers embark on this unique adventure. Why not you?
If you are ready to take on the challenge, here is a complete checklist to prepare for your Tour du Mont Blanc in the best conditions!
Checklist of Gear to Pack for Your TMB
1. Clothing
The clothing you wear plays a crucial role in the comfort and success of your trek (the brand Picture notably offers excellent women’s hiking clothing and ski touring jackets for those who want to venture onto the trails and slopes in winter). It is essential to equip yourself properly to deal with temperature variations and unpredictable weather conditions in the mountains. A breathable base layer, an insulating mid-layer and a waterproof jacket are the pillars of an effective clothing system.
We recommend you pack:
- Technical base layer (top and bottom) : These garments wick away sweat and keep your body dry during exercise.
- Mid-layer fleece or softshell : It provides thermal insulation to protect you from the cold.
- Waterproof and breathable jacket (hardshell) : Essential to protect you from rain and wind without blocking moisture evacuation.
- Hiking shorts and trousers : Choose lightweight and durable materials for optimal freedom of movement.
- Waterproof over-trousers : Useful in heavy rain or for crossing wet terrain.
- Light gloves, cap, beanie, neck gaiter : These accessories protect you from temperature variations and bad weather. Depending on the time of year you choose, a pair of gloves can really make the difference!
2. Boots and Socks
Your feet will be your best allies during the trek. It is therefore essential to invest in quality footwear suited to the rugged terrain of the Tour du Mont Blanc (check out our article on the difficulty of the TMB to learn more). Pair them with technical socks to prevent blisters and keep your feet dry. Finally, don’t forget sandals to give your feet some relief in the evening.
We recommend you pack:
- Hiking boots or trail shoes : Provide good ankle support and excellent grip on uneven terrain.
- High-cut socks : Prevent friction and keep your feet warm and dry.
- Recovery sandals : Ideal for resting your feet after a long day of walking.

3. Technical Gear
The equipment you bring must be chosen carefully, as it will accompany you throughout your journey. A good backpack with an integrated hydration system is essential, as are trekking poles to reduce the strain on your knees. Sunglasses will protect your eyes from reflections off snow and rocks.
We recommend you pack:
- Backpack (30-40L if staying in refuges, 40-50L if self-sufficient) : Choose a comfortable model with adjustable straps and good lumbar support.
- Hydration system: water bladder, water bottle : Stay well hydrated by keeping water within easy reach.
- Sunglasses : Protect your eyes from UV rays and bright reflections at altitude.
- Trekking poles : Reduce muscle fatigue and provide better stability on difficult terrain.
- Tent designed for hiking or multi-day treks : A lightweight and compact tent is essential for nights in the wild on a bivouac-style trek. Make sure to read up on the bivouac regulations on the Tour.
- Sleeping bag : Choose a model suited to the temperatures encountered in the mountains to ensure warm nights and optimal rest.
4. Miscellaneous Accessories
It is often the small details that make the difference on a trek. A survival blanket can prove vital in an emergency, while a compact toiletry bag and biodegradable soap will allow you to stay clean without harming the environment. Also remember to bring energy bars for tasty and revitalising breaks.
We recommend you pack:
- Sleeping bag liner : Provides extra hygiene in refuges or in your sleeping bag.
- Headlamp or torch : To light your way for early morning starts or for reading in the evening.
- Navigation equipment: map, compass, altimeter, GPS : Always be sure of your route with these essential tools.
- Toiletry bag and personal first-aid kit : Take care of yourself with essential products for your comfort and health.
- Sunscreen, lip balm : Protect your skin and lips from the effects of sun and wind.
- Identity documents and money (euros and Swiss francs) : Essential for your bookings and purchases at refuges.
- Survival blanket, lighter, knife, cord, earplugs : Versatile accessories for handling the unexpected and improving your comfort.
