Refuge de la Croix du Bonhomme is closed. Since 17 August 2026 the FFCAM has been carrying out renovation work there: no beds, no meals, no visitors for the whole length of the works, and the site is strictly off-limits to the public. The entire 2027 season is affected, and reopening is announced for 2029 on the refuge’s website.
The refuge stands at 2 443 m8 015 ft in the municipality of Bourg-Saint-Maurice, just after the Col de la Croix du Bonhomme when you climb from Les Contamines. It is shared by the Tour du Mont Blanc and the Tour du Beaufortain, between Les Contamines-Montjoie and Les Chapieux.
The French Alpine Club, which has run it since 1983 and bought it in 1987, sets out its renovation project (in French): bring back the 104 beds of before Covid (the refuge had dropped to 90), bring the building up to fire safety and public-building standards, and be able to staff it in winter and spring for ski tourers.
For 2027, we recommend planning the stage differently. On the Les Contamines side, sleep at Refuge de Nant Borrant or Refuge de la Balme; on the Les Chapieux side, Auberge-Refuge de la Nova is at the foot of the Col du Bonhomme. A little further on, below the Col de la Seigne, Refuge des Mottets is open from 10 June to 20 September 2027.
